Directed by Chris Columbus and penned by screenwriters Tim Herlihy and Timothy Dowling, this film merges the worlds of classic video gaming with a high-stakes alien invasion scenario, creating an entertaining family-friendly feature with a dash of science-fiction thrills.
Plot Summary
The story of "Pixels" unfolds around a group of childhood arcade game champions who are enlisted by the U.S. military to combat an alien invasion. The twist? The aliens interpret video feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war and send real-life versions of those games to attack Earth. The arcade games include iconic classics such as Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Centipede, and Space Invaders. The film cleverly uses this premise to provide both intense action sequences and comedic scenarios as the protagonists fight pixelated monsters and resurrect their gaming skills from childhood.
The movie’s protagonist, Sam Brenner, once a celebrated arcade champion, is called back into action when the world’s fate hangs in the balance. Alongside him are his best friend Will Cooper, a technical genius and former gaming buddy; Ludlow Lamonsoff, a brilliant but socially awkward gamer; and Eddie Plant, another old friend with a comedic flair. Together, they form a team tasked with deciphering the alien threats and saving humanity.
