Using their wits, Ganpatrao “Babubhai” Apte, Ghanshyam “Shyam”, and Raju find themselves wealthy beyond their imagination. They each have a car, a palatial house with a huge swimming pool, that Babubhai is yet to familiarize himself with, and a very easy life. Then Raju finds out that he can double his wealth in 21 days, and meets with an attractive young woman named Anuradha from an agency in Bombay’s business district. She informs him that the minimum investment is one Crore, and Raju quickly agrees to invest this money. He dupes another man by the name of Pappu into parting with 50 Lakhs, and the rest of the money comes through by getting Shyam and Babu to sign away their respective investments. After 21 days when the trio go to collect their doubled wealth, they find that Anuradha and her company have disappeared. Devastated, they move out of their bungalow and are now living in a shanty room in a Chawl when they get a visit from Pappu, who wants his money back, as he owes this money to Tiwari, an underworld Don. The trio decide to meet with Tiwari and plead with him, but all in vain, then they decide to stage a robbery, however, that does not go well either. It is then they find out that a rich Parsi man owns an antique gun collection that is worth more than their loss. They plan to steal these guns, and make a deal with Tiwari, however, once again Murphy’s Law prevails and the hapless trio find themselves on the run from a multitude of gangsters and killers – including a man who can bite through steel and a faceless 8 foot monster – who will not stop at anything to get their hands on the guns.

Phir Hera Pheri (2006): A Hilarious Sequel that Elevated Bollywood Comedy

Introduction

Phir Hera Pheri, released in 2006, stands as one of the most beloved Bollywood comedy films of the 2000s. Directed by Neeraj Vora and written by Neeraj Vora alongside some contributions from leading actors, this film is the sequel to the 2000 hit Hera Pheri. It has become a cult classic for its impeccable comic timing and eccentric characters. Featuring an ensemble cast led by Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, and the legendary Paresh Rawal, the movie effortlessly blends crime and comedy to deliver a thoroughly entertaining cinematic experience.

What is the Movie About?

Phir Hera Pheri centers on the continuing misadventures of three financially struggling friends—Raju (Akshay Kumar), Shyam (Suniel Shetty), and Baburao Ganpatrao Apte, or Babu Bhaiya (Paresh Rawal). After the events of the first film, these characters find themselves once again caught in a web of schemes, scams, and outrageous money-making ventures.

The story kicks off with the trio coming into a huge sum of money, but true to their nature, their greed and naiveté soon lead them into deeper trouble. The plot thickens as they become entangled in a complex crime involving kidnappings, ruthless gangsters, and double-crossings. Alongside the chaos, the film is packed with a series of comedic scenes driven by misunderstandings, slapstick humor, and witty dialogues that have since become iconic among fans.

What sets Phir Hera Pheri apart is its ability to balance crime elements with pure comedy in a manner that is both engaging and light-hearted. The movie highlights themes of friendship, trust, and the perils of chasing quick money, all conveyed through uproarious sequences that keep audiences entertained from start to finish.

Main Actors and Their Roles

  • Akshay Kumar as Raju: As the quick-witted, street-smart member of the trio, Akshay Kumar delivers a performance brimming with high energy and impeccable comic timing. His character is often the instigator of schemes that go awry, yet he remains endearing throughout.
  • Paresh Rawal as Baburao Ganpatrao Apte (Babu Bhaiya): Arguably one of Paresh Rawal's most memorable roles, Babu Bhaiya is a lovable yet hilarious garage owner who provides many comic moments through his unique mannerisms and catchphrases.
  • Suniel Shetty as Shyam: Shyam plays the more serious and cautious friend among the group. Suniel Shetty balances straight-man setups with comedic sequences, making him an essential part of the trio’s dynamic.

Supporting actors add to the film's charm, including big names playing antagonists and other quirky characters that interact with the trio’s chaotic plans.

Director and Writer

Neeraj Vora helmed Phir Hera Pheri as the director and also contributed as the writer. His direction preserves the spirit of the original Hera Pheri while amplifying the comic elements and presenting a more complex storyline. Neeraj Vora was known for his flair in comedy and screenplay writing, traits that are vividly evident in this movie. Under his guidance, the film successfully blended physical humor with situational comedy.

The Music and Songs

While Phir Hera Pheri is primarily a comedy-crime film, it also features a soundtrack characteristic of Bollywood’s melodic tradition. The music added flavor to the storytelling, although the focus remained on the comedy and narrative. The songs in the film were composed by Anu Malik, a renowned music director known for his versatility.

  • "Stylish Thumka" – A peppy and upbeat number that became popular for its catchy beats and dance moves. Sung by popular vocalists like Sunidhi Chauhan, it brought a youthful energy to the film.
  • "Mungda Mungda" – A remixed classic styled to suit the fun and quirky mood of the movie, it featured lively vocals and vibrant choreography.
  • Background Score – The movie’s background music effectively underscored the comedic timing and suspenseful moments, contributing significantly to the overall mood.

Though the songs may not have dominated the charts permanently, they fit seamlessly in the narrative and added to the entertainment quotient.

Impact and Legacy

Phir Hera Pheri is widely regarded as one of the best comedy sequels in Hindi cinema history. It resonated with audiences for its relatable characters, laugh-out-loud scenes, and memorable dialogues. The film helped consolidate the careers of its leading actors and remains a favorite for its rewatch value.

Its far-reaching influence can be seen in various memes, pop culture references, and the anticipation surrounding the rumored third installment, which fans eagerly await. The movie also set a benchmark for ensemble cast comedies that combine crime capers with humor.

Conclusion

In summary, Phir Hera Pheri (2006) is a must-watch Bollywood comedy that masterfully combines humor and crime, brought to life by stellar performances from Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, and Suniel Shetty, all under the able direction and writing of Neeraj Vora.
