Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai (2010): A Tale of Crime, Power, and Emotions

Introduction

"Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai" is a gripping 2010 Hindi crime drama that takes audiences into the underworld of Mumbai during the 1970s and 1980s. Directed by Milan Luthria and penned by Rajat Arora, the film masterfully blends elements of crime, drama, romance, and history to narrate the rise of the gangster scene in the city known as Bombay back then. With its stellar cast, captivating storyline, and melodious soundtrack, the movie has established itself as a standout Bollywood classic.

Plot Summary

The story primarily explores the life of Sultan Mirza (played by Ajay Devgn), a charismatic and principled gangster who controls the Mumbai underworld with his own sense of honor and justice. Sultan is portrayed as an enigmatic figure who protects the common people from oppression, creating a Robin Hood-like aura around him.

As Sultan’s empire flourishes, the movie introduces the ambitious and ruthless Shoaib Khan (portrayed by Emraan Hashmi), who arrives in Mumbai with dreams of becoming the city's most powerful criminal. The narrative delves into the brutal rivalry and the clash of ideologies between the old-school gangster Sultan and the modern-day Shoaib, marking the transition in the city's criminal landscape.

Alongside the gangster saga, the film weaves in elements of romance. The characters of Jasmine (Kangana Ranaut) and Mumtaz, Sultan’s love interests, add emotional depth and humanize the narrative. Their relationships reflect the struggles and sacrifices intertwined with lives in the world of crime.

Main Cast and Performances

  • Ajay Devgn as Sultan Mirza: Ajay Devgn delivers a compelling and nuanced portrayal of the strong yet respectful don. His performance is understated but powerful, capturing the complexity of a man living by his own moral code amidst chaos.
  • Emraan Hashmi as Shoaib Khan: Emraan perfectly embodies the role of a cunning and aggressive upstart whose hunger for power knows no bounds. His portrayal adds intensity and menace to the film.
  • Kangana Ranaut as Jasmine: Kangana’s vibrant depiction of Jasmine lends charm and poignancy to the story. She balances innocence with grit, effectively complementing the male leads.
  • Other supporting actors also contribute effectively to the film’s rich texture, enabling a believable portrayal of Mumbai’s crime world.

  • 'Pee Loon' sung by Mohit Chauhan – This romantic track became an anthem for love, characterized by its melodic charm and soulful rendering.
  • 'Tere Bin' by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan – A soulful qawwali-style ballad that adds emotional weight to the movie’s romantic subplot.
  • 'Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai' by Roop Kumar Rathod – A melodious and soothing song that beautifully emphasizes deep emotional connections.
