For 10 idyllic years, young Mija (An Seo Hyun) has been caretaker and constant companion to Okja-a massive animal and an even bigger friend-at her home in the mountains of South Korea. But that changes when a family-owned multinational conglomerate Mirando Corporation takes Okja for themselves and transports her to New York, where image obsessed and self-promoting CEO Lucy Mirando (Tilda Swinton) has big plans for Mija’s dearest friend. With no particular plan but single-minded in intent, Mija sets out on a rescue mission, but her already daunting journey quickly becomes more complicated when she crosses paths with disparate groups of capitalists, demonstrators and consumers, each battling to control the fate of Okja…while all Mija wants to do is bring her friend home. Deftly blending genres, humor, poignancy and drama, Bong Joon Ho (Snowpiercer, The Host) begins with the gentlest of premises-the bond between man and animal-and ultimately creates a distinct and layered vision of the world that addresses the animal inside us all. Okja is a Plan B Entertainment, Lewis Pictures and Kate Street Picture Company production in association with Netflix.

Okja (2017): A Heartfelt Tale of Friendship, Corporate Greed, and Animal Rights
Released in 2017, Okja is a critically acclaimed action-adventure drama that seamlessly blends heartwarming storytelling with intense social commentary. This film explores themes of animal welfare, environmentalism, and the ethics of corporate power, set against the backdrop of a gripping adventure. Directed by the visionary South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho, Okja has garnered worldwide attention for its unique narrative and strong performances by a diverse international cast.
Plot Summary
The story revolves around a young Korean girl named Mija, portrayed by Ahn Seo-hyun, who has spent ten idyllic years raising her beloved super pig, Okja, a genetically modified animal designed by a powerful multinational conglomerate, the Mirando Corporation. When Okja is suddenly taken away to New York City for the company's global promotional campaign, Mija embarks on a daring journey to rescue her friend. As she navigates the complexities of a foreign city and confronts the dark underbelly of corporate exploitation, Mija receives unexpected help from a group of animal rights activists.
The film expertly balances the emotional connection between Mija and Okja with the harsher realities of the world, culminating in a thought-provoking examination of humanity's relationship to nature and consumerism.
Main Actors and Characters
Director and Writer
Bong Joon-ho helmed Okja as director and co-writer, working alongside Jon Ronson and Kelley Jones. Bong's distinctive style is evident throughout the film, with its mix of satire, drama, and action seamlessly interwoven. Known for his previous works such as Snowpiercer and Parasite, Bong brings a sharp societal critique married to masterful storytelling in Okja.
Production and Reception
Produced as a Netflix original film, Okja stands out for its collaboration of Hollywood and South Korean talent, both in front of and behind the camera. The movie was noted for its bold thematic content and multifaceted characters. It has been praised for its stunning visual effects, especially in bringing the character of Okja to life — a feat accomplished with cutting-edge computer-generated imagery that makes the super pig feel both realistic and endearing.
Themes and Social Commentary
At its core, Okja challenges viewers to reflect on the ethical dilemmas surrounding genetic modification, factory farming, and global capitalism. It critiques how large corporations prioritize profits over environmental and ethical concerns, while also celebrating the power of individual kindness and activism. The relationships between humans and animals portrayed in the film evoke empathy and ask audiences to reconsider their own food choices and values.
Music and Score
Unlike Bollywood films, Okja does not include musical numbers or songs sung by characters. Instead, the soundtrack is composed to enhance the emotional resonance and tension throughout the film. The music score, created by Jaeil Jung, artfully underscores both the touching and thrilling moments of the story, complementing Bong Joon-ho's dynamic direction.
Conclusion
Okja is a beautifully crafted film that transcends genre boundaries. It appeals to audiences who enjoy adventure and drama but also seek meaningful narratives that provoke deeper thought about important global issues. Through outstanding performances—especially by young Ahn Seo-hyun and the versatile Tilda Swinton—and visionary direction by Bong Joon-ho, Okja remains a memorable cinematic experience that lingers in the minds of viewers long after the credits roll.
Overall, Okja is a must-watch film that combines heart, humor, and a powerful message, making it a standout title in the world of international cinema. For those interested, additional information can be found on its IMDb page.
