Mandar Ponkshe is an ordinary guy, meaning there is hardly anything extraordinary about him. He is maybe 5’8″ or 5’9″. He dresses very un-dandily if there was such a term, wears a goatee to hide what could be considered a weak chin. Mandar does not attract attention because he wants to be seen as ordinary. But behind that facade is a story – of an interesting past life that has been led. His single-minded pursuit of girls, tall and short, stout or with a pout. He’s funny unconventionally without meaning to be witty. His friends have lost all hope of him settling down, as they know that he doesn’t plan to. And then suddenly he meets someone whom he starts liking… and falls in love with. What will happen now? Will she know about his past? Will he able to hide his Hunterrrr reputation? The story of a guy, who doesn’t want to grow up!

Hunterrr (2015) - A Bold and Hilarious Take on Love and Lust

Introduction

Hunterrr is a 2015 Indian Hindi-language movie that combines comedy, romance, and a candid exploration of human relationships. Directed by Harshavardhan Kulkarni and starring Gulshan Devaiah and Radhika Apte in the lead roles, this film stands out for its frank and humorous portrayal of the male protagonist's journey through love and lust. It defies typical Bollywood romantic tropes by weaving an adult-oriented storyline that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.

Plot Overview

At its core, Hunterrr is about Mandar Ponkshe (played by Gulshan Devaiah), a charming yet unapologetic womanizer who navigates through a series of relationships in his pursuit of physical intimacy. Throughout the film, Mandar indulges in casual encounters and struggles to commit emotionally, treating women as conquests more than partners. However, the story takes a turn when Mandar begins to confront the emptiness behind his hedonistic lifestyle and reflects on what it truly means to love.

The film uniquely addresses the gender dynamics of Indian society by focusing on a male character's sexuality, which is rarely explored in such an open manner in Hindi cinema. The narrative spans over a decade, capturing different phases of Mandar's life, and this time progression allows audiences to witness his transformation and emotional maturation.

Main Cast and Crew

  • Gulshan Devaiah as Mandar Ponkshe: Gulshan delivers a nuanced and compelling performance, striking a balance between the comic and the contemplative aspects of his character. His portrayal brings depth to a protagonist who could have easily been reduced to a one-dimensional womanizer.
  • Radhika Apte as Jaya: Her role as Mandar's love interest adds emotional weight to the story. Radhika’s expressive and restrained acting provides a perfect counterpoint to Gulshan’s flamboyant character.
  • Director: Harshavardhan Kulkarni helms the project with a vision that is fresh, witty, and sensitive. His approach ensures that while the film contains humor and candidness, it doesn't devolve into vulgarity or slapstick.
  • Writer: The script is co-written by Harshavardhan Kulkarni himself, along with Vaidehi Parshurami and Vaibhav Lavande, who contribute to its sharp dialogues and well-crafted story.

Directorial Style and Narrative

Harshavardhan Kulkarni’s direction imbues the film with a breezy and realistic tone. Instead of glossing over uncomfortable or taboo subjects, the movie embraces them openly, allowing the viewer to laugh at human foibles while reflecting on the impact of casual relationships. The narrative is character-driven with a focus on growth, regrets, and realizations, which elevates it beyond being a simple romantic comedy.

The screenplay smartly balances explicit themes with humor and emotional depth, making it relatable especially to the urban Indian youth. The dialogues are colloquial and often witty, making the movie engaging without being preachy.

Music and Songs

As a Bollywood film, Hunterrr also integrates a soundtrack that complements its narrative style. The music is composed by Dhruv Ghanekar, who brings a contemporary and jazzy feel to the soundtrack. The songs effectively mirror the film's mood — at once playful, sensual, and introspective.

  • "So Good" – Sung by Ayushmann Khurrana, this lively and flirtatious track sets the tone for the protagonist's carefree attitude.
  • "Alien Bawa" – Vocals by Mridul Sharma and Dhruv Ghanekar add a funky and quirky vibe, matching Mandar's offbeat journey.
  • "Ho Ja Tu Meri" – A melodious track sung by Neeti Mohan and Kunal Ganjawala that brings in the romantic element, highlighting the emotional core of the story.
  • "Katra Katra" – Sung by Dhruv Ghanekar himself, this song is more contemplative and aligns with the protagonist’s moments of introspection.

The soundtrack, although not extravagant, is carefully curated to fit the mood of the film and helps in storytelling rather than serving as mere interludes.

Reception and Impact

Upon release, Hunterrr was praised for its bold storytelling and candid treatment of sexuality in Indian cinema, something that is seldom addressed so openly. Critics appreciated the performances of Gulshan Devaiah and Radhika Apte, acknowledging their ability to bring authenticity to complex characters.

While not a blockbuster by box office standards, the film garnered a cult following, especially among urban audiences who related to its honest portrayal of love, lust, and the search for meaningful connections. The film sparked conversations about male sexuality and relationship dynamics, challenging social norms and taboos prevalent in Indian society.

Conclusion

Hunterrr is a fresh and unapologetic take on romance and relationships that breaks free from conventional Bollywood formulas. With its engaging narrative, strong performances, and memorable music, it offers a humorous yet serious reflection on the complexities of human desires and emotions. This film is a must-watch for those who appreciate cinema that pushes boundaries with a humanized and sensitive touch.
