Six city students take refuge in deserted ruins when stranded on a highway, and start telling each other scary stories to keep amused. The stories include: A husband trying to scare his wife; a man stuck at a creepy “healthy hotel”; a school teacher spooked by a child’s homework; a housewife scared of apples; a bizarre lift on a freeway; and a college kid with an unusual power. Unlike the usual Indian horror film, this does not resort to sound effects and visuals for thrills. Each sketch has its moments, though a couple of them could have been brilliant with small script changes, and a resistance to oversimplifying. Most of the actors do decent jobs, especially Raghubir Yadav as the freaked-out school-teacher.

Darna Mana Hai (2003) is a unique Bollywood horror-adventure film that stands out for its anthology-style storytelling and its engaging blend of scares and dark humor. Directed by Prawaal Raman, the film brings together an ensemble cast featuring some of the most talented actors of the time, including Nana Patekar, Saif Ali Khan, Vivek Oberoi, and Sameera Reddy. The screenplay and story were also penned by Prawaal Raman, showcasing his vision to create a fresh, entertaining approach to the horror genre in Indian cinema.

The film released in 2003, a time when Bollywood was experimenting with genres beyond traditional romance and drama. Darna Mana Hai is particularly noted for its innovative narrative format – it is an anthology horror film composed of six short stories, each layered with psychological twists and suspense. The title translates to "Fear is Forbidden," which aptly captures the film’s underlying theme: confronting fears and understanding the nature of fear itself.

Plot Overview:

The movie opens with six strangers traveling together on a night journey after missing their bus. Their names are Vikram (played by Saif Ali Khan), Raghu (Vivek Oberoi), Rahul (Manoj Pahwa), Narayan (Boman Irani), Tanya (Sameera Reddy), and Sonia (Shamita Shetty). To pass the time and perhaps escape their nervousness about being stranded, they begin sharing scary stories, each of which unfolds as a self-contained mini-movie. The storytelling device cleverly transitions the audience into the different terrifying tales, each exploring various facets of fear.

  • Story 1: The Missing Patient – A creepy narrative about a couple encountering a mysterious hospital and a shocking secret.
  • Story 2: The Killer’s In the River – A haunting story involving a serial killer and a chilling chase along a river.
  • Story 3: The Psychiatric Patient – Delving into psychological horror, this tale features a patient and his disturbing revelations.
  • Story 4: Darkness – Centers around a power cut and the unseen evils lurking in the dark, playing on primal fears.
  • Story 5: The Bus Stop – This tale incorporates elements of urban legends and the fear of the unknown while waiting at a deserted bus stop.
  • Story 6: The Genie – A fable-like story that mixes mythical elements with horror, playing on the theme of temptation and consequences.

Each story is interspersed with the interactions between the travelers, whose own fates ultimately tie the film’s tales together in a surprising finale, blurring the lines between reality and imagination. The narrative style keeps audiences continuously engaged, moving seamlessly between tension, fright, and occasional humor.

Main Cast and Their Roles:

  • Saif Ali Khan as Vikram: The central figure who often serves as the narrative's anchor, Saif brings charm and a grounded presence amidst the spooky atmosphere.
  • Nana Patekar in a memorable role adding gravitas and intensity to his story segment.
  • Vivek Oberoi as Raghu: His character is portrayed with a blend of bravado and vulnerability, fitting well within the group dynamics and his story.
  • Sameera Reddy as Tanya: She delivers a convincing performance balancing fear and courage.
  • Boman Irani as Narayan: Known for his versatile acting, Boman adds a distinctive presence, especially in the psychological horror segments.
  • Shamita Shetty as Sonia: Though not mentioned in the top credits, she plays a significant role within the group and in one of the stories.

Direction and Writing:

Prawaal Raman, making his directorial debut, impressed critics and audiences alike with his ability to create an engaging, multi-layered horror experience. The writing is clever, with each story standing out not only for the scares but also for their narrative craft, often featuring unexpected twists that kept viewers intrigued. The film reflects Raman's understanding of the horror genre and his penchant for blending it with an adventurous and sometimes satirical tone.

Music and Songs:

Darna Mana Hai also shines in its music department, with songs that blend seamlessly into the film’s eerie atmosphere while staying true to Bollywood’s musical traditions. The music was composed by Ranjit Barot, a respected name in the Indian music industry. The soundtrack mixes haunting melodies with more upbeat numbers to mirror the film’s varied moods.

  • "Darma Mana Hai" – The title track that encapsulates the essence of facing one’s fears, sung with a mix of ominous and inviting tones.
  • "Tanha Tanha" – A soulful and slightly melancholic track that reflects the loneliness and vulnerability of the characters.
  • "Feeling Hot" – A lively, peppy number that adds a dash of fun and relief amidst the tension.

Vocals were contributed by notable singers including Kunal Ganjawala, Shaan, and Kavita Krishnamurthy, whose performances complement the emotional cues and enhance the film’s atmosphere.

Reception and Legacy:

Darna Mana Hai was received positively for its fresh concept in Indian horror cinema. Critics appreciated the way the film avoided typical horror clichés and instead opted for psychological thrills and narrative depth. The performances, especially by seasoned actors like Nana Patekar and Boman Irani, elevated the film beyond the conventional genre fare. Though not a blockbuster, it gained a cult following over the years for its innovative storytelling and remains a significant title in Bollywood’s horror genre.

In conclusion, Darna Mana Hai (2003) is a pioneering Bollywood horror anthology that successfully combines adventure and suspense with a profound understanding of fear. Its engaging stories, solid performances by an ensemble cast, and a memorable musical score make it a must-watch for fans of Indian cinema seeking thrills with substance. Director Prawaal Raman’s debut effort stands as a testament to creative storytelling, offering audiences a cinematic experience that remains hauntingly entertaining even decades after its release.
