My Cousin Rachel is a captivating drama and mystery romance film released in 2017 that delves into themes of love, trust, and deception.
Directed by Roger Michell, known for his nuanced storytelling and ability to bring complex characters to life, the film is adapted from the 1951 novel of the same name by Daphne du Maurier. The screenplay was skillfully written by Roger Michell and Rachel Bennette, who together crafted a narrative that maintains the novel's brooding atmosphere while adding modern cinematic sensibilities.
The story unfolds in 19th century Cornwall and follows Philip, a young Englishman, who is left an orphan under the guardianship of his mysterious cousin, Rachel. After the sudden death of his guardian and cousin Ambrose, Philip's life takes an unexpected turn when Rachel arrives, a woman shrouded in ambiguity and intrigue.
At the heart of the film is a deeply psychological exploration of Philip's emotions as he grapples with his attraction and suspicion towards Rachel. The film expertly balances between romantic tension and the suspense of unraveling Rachel's true intentions, creating an alluring sense of uncertainty that permeates throughout.
Main Actors and Performances
Supporting roles include Iain Glen and Holliday Grainger, who add depth and texture to the narrative, enhancing the period setting and complex interpersonal dynamics.
Plot Overview
Philip Ashcroft inherits a large estate after the death of his charismatic older cousin Ambrose. However, when Philip suspects that Rachel, Ambrose’s widow and his cousin’s new bride, might have been involved in Ambrose’s death or is trying to take over the estate, he embarks on a conflict that mixes passion with suspicion. Is Rachel a schemer plotting her way to wealth, or a misunderstood woman longing for affection in a cold, patriarchal world? The film skillfully keeps this question dangling, captivating viewers throughout its tight narrative.
The screenplay intricately explores Philip's internal conflict and the gradual development of his feelings for Rachel, juxtaposing the lush Cornish landscape with an undercurrent of menace and sorrow. Director Roger Michell’s atmospheric direction complements the period drama with delicate pacing and mood, ensuring that the film sustains a slow-burning tension that is both romantic and suspenseful.
Cinematography and Style
The film boasts elegant cinematography that beautifully captures the moody landscapes of Cornwall, steep cliffs, and manor houses, which almost play a character themselves in building the film’s haunting ambiance. The lighting and color palette shift expertly alongside the narrative tone—from warm and inviting to cold and mysterious—as Philip’s trust in Rachel ebbs and flows.

Many critics highlighted the film's effective portrayal of ambiguity and emotional complexity, which invites viewers to form their own interpretations of Rachel's character.
