A megalomaniac C.E.O. sends his son into the dangerous African Congo on a quest for a source of diamonds large enough and pure enough to function as powerful laser communications transmitters (or is it laser weapons?). When contact is lost with his son and the team, his sometime daughter- in-law is sent after them. She is a former CIA operative and, accompanied by gee-whiz gadgetry and a few eccentric characters (including a mercenary, a researcher with a talking gorilla, and a a nutty Indiana-Jones-type looking for King Solomon’s Mines), sets out to rescue her former fiancé. What they all discover is that often what we most want turns out to be the source of our downfall.

About the Movie:

"Congo" is a 1995 adventure thriller that blends elements of mystery and action, taking audiences deep into the heart of the African jungle. The film is a cinematic adaptation of Michael Crichton's 1980 novel of the same name, carrying the intricate narrative and suspenseful plot that Crichton's stories are famous for. Directed by Frank Marshall, known for his work on adventure and thriller films, and penned by John Patrick Shanley, "Congo" aims to deliver a high-energy spectacle with a compelling story.

The story centers around an expedition led by Karen Ross (played by Laura Linney), a determined and intelligent communications expert hired by a mining corporation to investigate a failed mission in the Congo rainforest. The initial mission – to discover the source of valuable blue diamonds – has mysteriously lost contact with the outside world. Along with a team that includes Dr. Peter Elliott (Dylan Walsh), an animal expert, and Captain Munro Kelly (Ernie Hudson), they embark on a perilous journey into the dense jungle.

The mission quickly grows dangerous as the team encounters various threats from the natural environment and hostile mercenaries who appear to be after the same prize. The greatest threats, however, are the secretive and highly intelligent gorillas, especially one legendary silverback named Amy. The film explores the interactions between humans and these remarkable creatures, unveiling themes of communication, environment, and survival.

Tim Curry delivers a memorable performance as the villainous Herkermer Homolka, a ruthless corporate operative whose agenda threatens both the team and the very ecology of the Congo rainforest. The on-screen tension between the heroes and the mercenaries coupled with the thrilling jungle action sequences keeps viewers engrossed.

Production and Reception:

Frank Marshall’s direction brings a polished and dynamic edge to the movie, with a mixture of ground-breaking special effects for the gorilla characters, practical jungle settings, and suspenseful storytelling. The screenplay by John Patrick Shanley smartly adapts Crichton's novel, condensing complex scientific and ecological themes into an accessible adventure film.

Upon its release, "Congo" attracted mixed reviews, with praise directed towards its action sequences and the ambitious use of animatronics and early CGI effects for the gorillas, but criticism focused on its plot pacing and character depth. Regardless, the film found a loyal fan base thanks to its thrilling approach to jungle exploration and the mystery surrounding the enchanted diamonds.

Why Watch "Congo"?

If you are a fan of adventure films with a dose of mystery and action, "Congo" is a visually engaging ride. It combines the excitement of an expedition with the tension of corporate greed, environmental ethics, and the challenge of understanding and respecting nature’s wonders — especially intelligent wildlife that science continues to fascinate over. The performances by Laura Linney and Tim Curry add to the tense dynamic, and the junglescapes provide a lush and immersive backdrop.

While "Congo" may not be regarded as a masterpiece, it remains a notable example of mid-90s adventure cinema and an entertaining way to explore themes inspired by Michael Crichton's storytelling. For those interested in thrilling mysteries set in exotic locations, laden with danger and a quest for rare treasures, "Congo" offers worthwhile entertainment.
