Sunder Srivastava (Shahrukh Khan) is a young graduate whose main ambition in life is to fulfill his father’s dream of starting a school on his half-acre property in his village, though he has no funds to execute his plans. Sunder’s childhood friend Prem, a seasoned conman who operates in Bombay, convinces the gullible Sunder to mortgage his land to the village Zamindar (landlord) and fly to Dubai. Prem promises Sunder a handsomely paying teacher’s job in Dubai that would give Sunder enough money to start his school within two years. Sunder does as told and arrives in Bombay to meet Prem; not only is there no sign of his friend at the station, but Sunder also gets unwittingly involved with a petty thief who robs him of all his luggage and money. To make matters worse, when Sunder reaches Prem’s lodge, he finds an apologetic letter from Prem informing him that he has used his Rs.10,000 to get himself to Dubai instead and will one day repay him. Now at the end of his tether, Sunder wanders into an old Christian cemetery. Sitting on an old grave, Sunder gives vent to his frustrations and strikes the tombstone in helplessness, but immediately apologizes to the deceased. This amuses the ghost of Amar Kumar– alias Marco (Naseeruddin Shah)– who was killed and thrown into the grave 20 years before, only to rise at Sunder’s apology. Marco explains to a frightened Sunder that he was a notorious Crime Don, who at the behest of his romantic partner Savitri (Malvika Tiwari), had resolved to give up crime, but was shot by his protégé Kunta the day after the wedding. Marco seeks Sunder’s help in getting even with his killers and promises Sunder a job and a place to stay in return. Marco manages to get Sunder a post in a school run by his father-in-law (Shammi Kapoor). Everyone grows fond of the new games teacher, including Marco’s daughter (Urmila Matondkar). This last, a vivacious girl of an age with Sunder, courts the boy at least twice, accompanied by her largely invisible father. Kunta (Tinnu Anand) makes an attempt to capture the playing ground on the college campus. The college is starved of funds and proposes a cricket match to collect funds. Sunder and his team are helped by the invisible Marco, who cheats on their behalf and ensures victory. When Sunder tries to tell the others that he can see and talk to Marco, nobody believes him. In a final bid for victory, Kunta captures Sunder, Marco’s daughter, and Marco’s father-in-law, attempting to bury them alive. Marco rescues them and gives all the criminals led by Kunta a beating. He is about to kill Kunta when Sunder pleads with him not to do so. Marco forgives his enemy and lets him go. In time, Sunder marries Marco’s daughter while Marco ascends to heaven. As he goes, Marco warns the children that although he came back to life for a second chance to do the right thing, they will not have the same chance; they therefore must make the best of what chances they have.

Chamatkar (1992): An Enchanting Blend of Comedy, Drama, and Fantasy in Bollywood

Released in the year 1992, Chamatkar is a heartwarming Hindi movie that seamlessly blends genres like comedy, drama, and fantasy. Directed by Rajiv Mehra, this film stands out not only because of its captivating storyline but also owing to its stellar cast, memorable music, and unique premise that has continued to charm audiences for decades.

Plot Summary

At its core, Chamatkar tells the story of a cheerful yet down-on-his-luck young man named Amar, played by Shah Rukh Khan, who is struggling to find his place in the world. He encounters the ghost of a man named Kailash (portrayed by Naseeruddin Shah), who seeks justice for the wrongs done to him during his lifetime. The film beautifully weaves the interactions between Amar and Kailash as they form an unusual friendship with a shared goal: to right the injustices that haunt the ghost’s past.

The magic of the film lies in its fantasy element, where a ghost becomes an active participant in the world of the living, influencing events and injecting humor and emotion into the narrative. The way the story unfolds combines moments of laughter, suspense, and emotional depth, making it a timeless classic.

Main Cast and Their Performances

  • Shah Rukh Khan (Amar Kumar): Before achieving superstar status, Shah Rukh Khan played Amar with refreshing innocence and optimism. His portrayal captures the struggles of a young man desperate to prove himself, and his chemistry with Naseeruddin Shah adds warmth and charm to the film.
  • Naseeruddin Shah (Kailash): As Kailash, the ghost seeking justice, Naseeruddin Shah delivers a nuanced performance that balances wit, grief, and a sense of righteousness. His character drives much of the film's emotional core, and Shah's acting brings authenticity to the supernatural elements.
  • Supporting actors include Mukesh Khanna, and Deven Verma, who add further depth and entertainment to the story, enriching the narrative with their well-executed roles.

Direction and Writing

Directed by Rajiv Mehra, Chamatkar benefits from his balanced approach to storytelling. Mehra masterfully intersperses moments of humor with drama and fantasy to create a film that appeals to a wide audience. The screenplay and dialogues, penned by Rajendra Krishan, lend the movie its light-hearted yet meaningful tone, ensuring that the fantasy elements don’t overshadow the emotional storyline.

Music and Songs

As a Bollywood film, Chamatkar is adorned with a melodious soundtrack composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, two of the industry’s most celebrated music directors. The music plays a crucial role in augmenting the film's emotional and entertainment value.

  • "Chamatkar Hai Kya" - A lively and catchy track that encapsulates the film's theme of miracles and supernatural events. Sung by the legendary singers Kumar Sanu and Anuradha Paudwal, this song gained popularity for its upbeat rhythm and memorable lyrics.
  • "Tum To Thehre Pardesi" - A soulful ballad delivered beautifully by Mohammed Aziz and Anuradha Paudwal, expressing longing and romantic emotions. This song enhances the emotional narrative of the film.
  • "Tuka Tuka" - An energetic number by Jagjit Singh and Asha Bhosle that adds a playful and jovial touch to the movie's musical repertoire.

The lyrics, penned by Anand Bakshi, are thoughtfully crafted to resonate with the moods and themes of the film. The songs contribute significantly to the film’s success and have continued to be cherished by fans even years after the film’s release.

Legacy and Impact

Chamatkar is often remembered today as one of the earlier films that showcased Shah Rukh Khan’s talent before he rose to superstardom in Bollywood. The film's unique storyline combining comedy, drama, and fantasy carved a niche for itself. Its theme of friendship transcending the boundaries of life and death, combined with its lighthearted narrative, make it a film that appeals to all ages.

Moreover, the performances of Shah Rukh Khan and Naseeruddin Shah complement each other perfectly, making their on-screen relationship one of the highlights of the film. Director Rajiv Mehra’s execution of a supernatural storyline with a human touch is commendable.

For anyone interested in classic Bollywood cinema that offers a mix of humor, emotion, and fantasy, Chamatkar is definitely worth watching. It serves as a reminder of the diversity and richness Bollywood films had in the early 1990s, featuring strong narratives, memorable music, and outstanding performances.
