It’s 2003. Thirty-eight-year-old graphic artist Oliver Fields has just lost his father Hal Fields to cancer, after Oliver’s mother Georgia Fields passed away five years earlier. Oliver is naturally a sullen man due to his growing up relationships with his parents (his mother who had a unique view on life) and watching his parents’ cordial but somewhat distant relationship with each other, but is more so now because of his personal family losses. Oliver embarks on a relationship with Anna, a French actress, hoping that his re-energized relationship with Hal following Georgia’s death, and Hal’s new outlook on life during that time, will show Oliver how to act in a loving relationship. After Georgia’s death, Hal came out of the closet and began to live with a joie de vivre that did not exist before, which included an open relationship with a much younger man named Andy. Oliver’s relationship with Anna has other obstacles, including Anna’s own vagabond lifestyle and Oliver needing to take care of who was originally Hal’s very needy Jack Russell terrier, Arthur.

Beginners is a heartfelt and touching 2010 film that beautifully blends comedy, drama, and romance to explore themes of love, life, and embracing change at any age. Directed and written by Mike Mills, this film offers a warm and authentic narrative, underscored by superb performances and a nuanced script that invites viewers to reflect on their own relationships and personal growth.

The movie centers around Oliver Fields, portrayed by Ewan McGregor, a young man coming to terms with the recent death of his father, Hal Fields, played by the legendary Christopher Plummer. What makes this story especially captivating is Hal's late-in-life personal revelation and transformation. Shortly after Oliver's mother passes away, Hal comes out as gay at the age of 75, embarking on a new chapter filled with romance and self-discovery. This late discovery prompts Oliver to reassess his own views on love and relationships.

Adding depth and complexity to the narrative is Mélanie Laurent, who plays Anna, a French actress and artist with whom Oliver embarks on a tentative but meaningful romantic journey. Her character brings vibrancy and hope, contrasting Oliver's initial guardedness and stirring emotions that feel both fresh and vulnerable.

Beginners is not just a character-driven story but a layered exploration of family dynamics, grief, and the courage it takes to live one’s truth. The relationship between Oliver and Hal is poignantly portrayed, highlighting how parents and children learn from each other even in the later stages of life.

The script by Mike Mills is intimate and deeply personal, likely drawing from his own experiences with his father. This lends an authenticity to the dialogue and character interactions, making the story resonate on multiple emotional levels. The screenplay is artfully balanced with moments of humor and tenderness, preventing the narrative from becoming overly melancholic while still respecting the gravity of its themes.

Christopher Plummer’s performance as Hal is one of the film’s highlights. He delivers a richly textured portrayal of an elderly man embracing a newfound identity that defies societal expectations. His depiction won critical acclaim and several awards, including the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Ewan McGregor’s Oliver is equally compelling, embodying the mix of skepticism, pain, and eventual openness that defines his character’s journey.

The film’s direction is subtle yet effective. Mike Mills takes a modest approach, allowing the story to unfold naturally and giving space for the characters' emotional nuances to shine. The use of visual storytelling, such as the inclusion of home movies and snapshots, enhances the sense of nostalgia and personal history.

Musically, Beginners features a soundtrack that complements its introspective mood, including compositions by Roger Neill and songs from various indie artists. The score is gentle and unobtrusive, perfectly underscoring moments of quiet reflection and joy without overpowering the narrative.

As a comedy-drama and romance, the film handles its themes with sensitivity and humor, ensuring it appeals to viewers looking for a thoughtful yet entertaining movie experience. It delicately addresses issues of aging, sexuality, and the complexities of human connections.

To sum up, Beginners (2010) stands out as a poignant and uplifting film that challenges traditional narratives about love and identity, especially in later life. It features strong performances by Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer, and Mélanie Laurent, a heartfelt script by Mike Mills, and direction that balances humor and pathos with finesse. This film is a celebration of life’s unexpected journeys and the courage it takes to embrace them fully.
