The Apartment (1960): A Classic Blend of Drama and Wit

Introduction

The film The Apartment, released in 1960, is a timeless cinematic gem that elegantly intertwines elements of drama, comedy, and romance. Directed by Billy Wilder and written by Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond, this movie has earned its status as one of the most iconic American films of the 20th century. It stars the legendary Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine, whose performances bring depth and authenticity to the story’s intricate narrative. With a carefully crafted screenplay, memorable characters, and a story that resonates even today, The Apartment remains a masterpiece praised by audiences and critics alike.

Plot Summary

The film revolves around C.C. Baxter (played by Jack Lemmon), a lowly office worker in a large insurance company in New York City. Ambitious and eager to climb the corporate ladder, Baxter lends his apartment to his superiors for their extramarital affairs, hoping that this will endear him to the higher-ups and secure him a promotion. However, his plan takes a turn when he discovers that Fran Kubelik (portrayed by Shirley MacLaine), the elevator operator he secretly adores, is involved with his boss, Jeff Sheldrake.

As the story unfolds, Baxter becomes entangled in a moral and emotional dilemma. When Fran attempts suicide due to the complicated relationship with her lover, Baxter intervenes and takes care of her, setting the stage for a heartfelt and transformative journey. The themes of loneliness, corporate politics, unrequited love, and personal integrity weave through the narrative, presenting a poignant reflection on human relationships and societal expectations.

Main Actors and Their Roles

  • Jack Lemmon as C.C. "Bud" Baxter: Lemmon delivers a nuanced performance as the earnest and somewhat naive Baxter. His ability to balance comedic timing with emotional depth makes his character relatable and endearing.
  • Shirley MacLaine as Fran Kubelik: MacLaine shines as Fran, embodying vulnerability and strength. Her portrayal captures the complexities of a woman caught between love and societal pressures.
  • Fred MacMurray as Jeff Sheldrake: Playing Baxter’s unscrupulous boss, MacMurray adds to the film’s tension with his slick and morally ambiguous character.
  • Jack Kruschen as Dorsey: Providing both comic relief and support, Kruschen plays Baxter’s neighbor and friend, contributing to the film’s warmth.

Direction and Writing

Director Billy Wilder is celebrated for his sharp storytelling and ability to blend humor with serious themes, and The Apartment exemplifies this talent. His direction ensures that the film maintains a delicate balance between satire and sincerity. The screenplay, co-written by Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond, is an exemplar of witty dialogue and character development. Their collaboration results in a screenplay that is both insightful and accessible, ensuring the movie’s enduring appeal.

Critical Reception and Legacy

Upon its release, The Apartment was met with critical acclaim, praised for its clever script, outstanding performances, and unique approach to adult themes.
